The Gotrax R1 is the opposite of the fat-tire bruisers on this site. At 45 lb with an aluminum frame, it's the lightest e-bike we review, and it folds to fit in a car trunk or ride along on the subway. Gotrax is also one of the best-known names on Amazon, and the R1 has more than 600 ratings.
The trade-off is a modest powertrain. The 350 W motor tops out at 20 mph and the 48 V 7.8 Ah battery holds just 374 Wh. Gotrax's own description quotes about 25 miles with pedal assist and 15.5 miles on throttle (the title's 40 miles is optimistic), with a 5.5-hour charge.
There's no suspension, but 20 × 2.6-inch tires take some of the edge off bumps. Dual disc brakes, an LCD, five assist levels and UL 2849 certification are all included. The warranty is 180 days, backed by a year of parts support.
In short, this is a bike for short urban trips and for people who need to lift or store it often, not for long rides or hills.
Best for: City riders with short trips who need to carry the bike upstairs, onto transit or into a small car.
