How to choose an electric bike
Battery: look at Wh, not just miles
Advertised range depends on assist level, rider weight and terrain, and every brand measures it differently. The number that compares best is battery capacity in watt-hours (Wh): volts times amp-hours, so 48 V × 15 Ah = 720 Wh. As a rule of thumb, real riding uses 15 to 25 Wh per mile.
Motor: rated and peak power
Rated power (for example 500 or 750 W) is what the motor can sustain; peak power is a short burst for starts and climbs. For the city, 350–500 W rated is enough; for steep hills or heavier riders, look for 750 W.
E-bike classes and US rules
Most states use three classes: Class 1 (pedal assist only, up to 20 mph), Class 2 (with throttle, up to 20 mph) and Class 3 (pedal assist up to 28 mph). A bike that goes past 20 mph on throttle may not be allowed on bike lanes or trails in your area, so check your state and city rules.
Brakes, weight and assembly
Hydraulic disc brakes stop with less effort than mechanical ones, which you'll appreciate above 20 mph. Weight matters if you have stairs: almost every e-bike is over 50 lb. And most arrive 80–90% assembled: check the brakes and bolts before your first ride or ask a bike shop for help.
Frequently asked questions
How many miles does an electric bike really go?
It depends on the battery, assist level, rider weight and terrain. A practical rule is to divide the battery's Wh by 20: a 500 Wh battery gives about 25 miles of mixed riding. On throttle alone without pedaling, range drops a lot.
Do I need a license or insurance for an e-bike in the US?
In most states, Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes don't need a license or registration, but rules vary by state and city, for example on minimum age or mandatory helmets for Class 3. Check your local regulations.
Is it a good idea to buy an e-bike on Amazon?
Amazon offers easy returns and fast shipping, which lowers the risk with lesser-known brands. On the other hand, bikes arrive partly assembled and after-sales service depends on the brand, so check the warranty before you buy.
